Historical Activities

Over the years, The NSCDA created and led several national projects which the Iowa Dames participated in including the Ancestor Bibliography Register and the Oral History Project.

Since 2006 the NSCDA Oral History Project has made video recording of oral histories of our members, our houses, the cemeteries we have restored, WWII veterans, etc. This body of work is limited only by the imagination of the ladies that engage with this project. The Oral History project preserves not only the stories of how we are being history's caretakers, but the sound of our voices and the way we laugh. So far, over 300 interviews have been safely stored in the archives at Dumbarton House.

Recent Historical Activities

The NSCDA-IA Dames have invited historical reenactors for programs focused on ancestry and the importance of never forgetting our past. The Davenport Borough Dames recently brought history alive by sponsoring two presentations to local middle school students. Thomas Jefferson, portrayed by Bill Barker, spoke to the students about the important lessons history can teach everyone as they prepare for the future.

The Davenport Borough continued to bring history alive in similar programs by inviting George Washington, as interpreted by Dean Malissa. He has portrayed Mr. Washington at Mount Vernon as well as venues around the world. Response from educators and the general public has encouraged the Dames to continue sponsorships of Lunch and Learn programs featuring historic interpreters in cooperation with Eastern Iowa Community College.

Recently, Leslie Goddard presented interpretations of “Alexander Hamilton’s Women” for several sell-out performances in collaboration with Eastern Iowa Community College and Plus 60 Group at the Davenport Outing Club. Ms. Goddard also presented programs on America’s First Ladies.
